Rolex Production Dates
In the
1950's, Rolex reached the 999,999 production
serial & started their 7 digit numeric
numbering system at 1,000,000.
This continued until the
1990's when production serials reached
9,999,999.
Rather than begin an 8 digit
production serial, Rolex used a letter prefix
such as R, then L, E & X - "ROLEX"
without the "O".
The letter
"O" intentionally omitted to avoid
any possible confusion with the number
"0".
In November 1991, a new
numbering system was introduced utilizing the
letters N, C and S.
In 1994, Rolex started yet another sequence with the letters: W, T U, A, P, and K .

The latest letter prefixes run concurrently, giving the
appearance of a random numbering system. This way only
Rolex knows the exact date that any watch was actually
produced.
